Behind the Scenes: Creating a Custom 1:12 Scale Solar System Model in Just 3 Days!

When a program manager from a U.S. solar organization reached out needing custom miniature equipment for an upcoming educational presentation, we jumped at the challenge!

Educational display models need to be exceptionally detailed and easy to read. Here is how we took real-life solar setups and turned them into a 1:12 scale model ready for the show—all in just three days.

🛠️ The Challenge: Precision & A Tight Deadline

Our client needed two sets of solar setups—including a Solar Inverter, Electric Utility Meter, and AC Safety Disconnect—to mount onto a model house for an upcoming event.

Because this miniature was going to be used as an educational tool, every component had to be instantly recognizable and clear.

We immediately got to work drafting initial 3D models and printing early mockups to check the sizing against a 1:12 scale door and wall layout.

📐 Step-by-Step Custom Design Process

1. Initial Mockups & Sizing Check

We created our first prototype based on standard 1:12 scale dimensions and sent over photo comparisons.

2. Client Feedback & Rescaling

After reviewing the prototype, our client noted that while the solar inverter looked great, the meter and disconnect switch were under an inch tall—making them a bit too small for an audience to see clearly during an educational demonstration.

They requested:

• Enlarging the Meter & Shutoff: Rescaling the utility meter and disconnect box so each component was at least 1 inch wide for maximum visibility.

• Proportional Adjustments: Re-adjusting the conduit wiring paths to connect smoothly across the newly scaled boxes.

3. Refinement & Final Approval

We reworked the 3D models, printed the updated components, added custom warning labels and miniature red handles, and laid them out next to a ruler for confirmation. The newly scaled set gave the educational model the bold, clear look it needed!
