Having Trouble Unzipping Your File? Here’s a Quick 10-Second Fix!

If you’ve just downloaded one of our digital papercraft files or templates, excited to get crafting, and ran into a popup error from Windows saying:

"Windows cannot complete the extraction. The destination path is too long. Rename the Compressed (zipped) Folder and try again."

Don't worry! Your download is perfectly fine and safe.

This is a common quirk with Microsoft Windows—it has a maximum character limit for file names and folder paths. Because our digital files often have descriptive names to help you find them easily, Windows sometimes thinks the file name is just a little too long to unzip.

Luckily, fixing this takes only a few seconds!

🛠️ Step-by-Step: How to Fix the "Destination Path Too Long" Error

You don't need any special software or technical skills. Just follow these simple steps:

Step 1: Locate your downloaded .zip file

Go to your computer’s Downloads folder (or wherever your browser saved the zip file).

Step 2: Right-click the .zip file and select "Rename"

  • Windows 11: Right-click the file and click the small Rename icon (looks like a tiny tag or pencil) or press F2 on your keyboard.

  • Windows 10: Right-click the file and click Rename near the bottom of the menu.

Step 3: Type a short name

Change the long name to something super short—like 1, mini, or craft—and press Enter.

Example:

✅Kraft.zip

Step 4: Extract (Unzip) your files!

Now, right-click your newly renamed .zip file and select "Extract All..." (or double-click to open it).

Windows will now unzip your PDF, PNG, or SVG files immediately without any error messages!

💡 Quick Tips for Windows Users

  • Move it to your Desktop: If changing the file name still gives an error, try dragging the .zip file directly onto your Desktop before unzipping it. The Desktop folder path is much shorter than deep folder paths!

  • Extracting on Mac or iPad: Apple devices generally don't have this character limit, so double-clicking the zip file usually opens it right away. This quick fix is mainly for Windows PCs.
